India to be self-sufficient in thermal coal production by FY25: Coal minister

According to the minister, for the first time in the country's history, such a large number of coal blocks are being auctioned.

On Wednesday, Pralhad Joshi, the union’s minister for coal, expressed optimism that by the financial year 2024–2025, the nation would produce a significant amount of thermal coal on its own.

During the investors’ conclave on “opportunities in the coal sector,” Joshi said, “We will be largely self-sufficient in thermal coal production by 2024–25 and the country will not face any problem in the thermal energy sector.”

According to him, 141 coal mines nationwide, including 28 blocks in Madhya Pradesh, are up for auction in the sixth phase.

The minister claims that this is the first time in the nation’s history that there are so many coal blocks up for auction.

According to him, the government anticipates earning Rs 25,000 crore from this auction, and after the start of production, two lakh people will have jobs.

Joshi urged the investors to take part in the coal mine bidding aggressively.

“We have made mine allocation rules and regulations more liberal and transparent for investors to boost coal production in the country,” he said.
