Google announces an end to Stadia game streaming service in January 2023

The American digital behemoth Google has announced that Stadia, its gaming streaming service, will be discontinued. The last day for it to operate will be January 18, 2023.

GSM Arena reports that the business will reimburse customers for all hardware and software expenditures. Everyone who purchased a Stadia controller will receive a refund. Additionally, for any game and add-on materials bought from the Stadia store. It’s anticipated that the refunds would be finished by mid-January 2023.

According to Google, other divisions of the corporation, including YouTube, Google Play, and its augmented reality (AR) initiatives, will employ the technology that powers Stadia.

Due to the company’s propensity to shut down ventures that don’t take off right away, the industry was sceptical when Google Stadia was introduced in March 2019. Numerous people also questioned the poor quality of the library and the exorbitant price of the games given that the user did not directly own them.

The service limped along for a time, even though Google stated two years later that it is closing its first-party gaming studio and the product leader left the organisation.

Because Microsoft, Nvidia, and Amazon are still dedicated to their services, Stadia’s demise need not spell the death of cloud gaming as a whole. According to GSM Arena, it was always going to be a long-term investment for these businesses, but Google is not choosing to do that.
