NEW DELHI: The first HPV vaccination manufactured at home has been released, according to Serum Institute of India CEO Adar Poonawalla. Amit Shah, Adar Poonawalla, and Prakash K Singh, director of government & regulatory affairs at Serum Institute of India, attended the launch.
Adar Poonawalla tweeted that “Serum Institute India is thrilled to launch the first made-in-India HPV vaccination by the hands of our Hon’ble Home Minister Shri @AmitShah Ji. @PrakashKsingh7 on the occasion of India’s National Girl Child Day and Cervical Cancer Awareness Month.”
Poonawalla stated that the corporation took roughly six to seven years to produce the HPV vaccination at the World Economic Forum in Davos in the year 2023. I’m particularly thrilled that we will debut the HPV vaccine, which is a vaccination to prevent cervical cancer in women, after around six to seven years of development, he had stated during the ceremony.
Additionally, he stated that in order to address the current market shortages, the HPV vaccine will be made available at a low cost and in large quantities.
The human papillomavirus, or HPV, vaccinations guard against infection by specific strains of the virus. The HPV strains that increase the risk of cervical cancer are protected from by these vaccines.
Dr. Jitendra Singh, Minister of State for the Ministry of Science and Technology & Earth Sciences, unveiled the HPV vaccine — the Quadrivalent Human Papillomavirus vaccine “CERVAVAC” — for the prevention of cervical cancer in September of last year.
The collaboration between Serum Institute, the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC), and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation led to the creation of the qHPV CERVAVAC.
